Distance/Online Learning

Distance/Online Learning (DL) connects students and instructors across geographical distances through MTCC’s learning management system, Open LMS. This platform provides 24/7 access to course materials, recorded lectures, notes, assignments, and assessments. Distance/online courses offer a high degree of flexibility, helping to eliminate common barriers to education. However, this format requires students to be self-motivated, manage their time effectively, and possess basic computer skills.

MTCC distance learners have full access to student services, library resources, and academic support, just like on-campus students. Tuition, fees, and curriculum credits are the same for online and in-person courses.

Course Delivery Formats

MTCC online courses are delivered in the following formats:

  • Asynchronous: No set meeting times. Students complete work on their own schedules, meeting instructor-set deadlines.
  • Synchronous: Scheduled live sessions conducted via Zoom or other video conferencing tools at specific days and times.
  • Internet/Online Courses (Section codes 50–53): Fully online and off-campus via Open LMS. Students access course content, participate in discussions, complete assignments, and take tests online. Instructors are available via MTCC email, phone, Zoom, and during office hours on campus.

Orientation & Readiness
An orientation is strongly recommended for all students taking fully online classes. The orientation covers essential software tutorials, success tips, and available MTCC resources to help students thrive in an online learning environment. Being familiar with the course layout and tools before the semester starts allows students to focus on learning, rather than troubleshooting.

A “DL - LMS Student Orientation” course is available within Open LMS and can be accessed at any time prior and during the semester. This resource is designed to help students become comfortable with the platform before beginning their academic work. An in-person DL Student Orientation is also available. Please refer to the “Dates to Remember” section for scheduled dates and times.
